This year: the Sudetes Way

This summer, for the second time, we want to invite a group of 20 people to the Liturgical Camino, which combines a pilgrimage along the Way of St. James with a music workshop and evangelization through the beauty of liturgical music (see how it went last year).

This year’s route is 210 km along the Polish–Czech border (the so-called Sudetes Way) from Bystrzyca Kłodzka to Lubań; along the way, besides picturesque mountains, we will see charming Lower Silesian towns full of history and impressive Baroque abbeys (Broumov and Krzeszów).

Whom do we invite?

Besides the ability to walk an average of 25 km a day and the readiness to stay in simple pilgrim accommodation, the criterion for joining the group will be singing experience. On the road and during stops we want to learn liturgical repertoire (including Gregorian chant, early polyphony, Renaissance music and contemporary compositions), so that by praying with it we can tell the people we meet about the beautiful God.

What does our journey look like?

In the towns where we stop for the night, we will invite the parishioners to pray together in song during the Eucharist and to listen to our preaching – a story about the spirit of the liturgy, expressed both in the music we perform and in the architecture and art of their own churches and chapels. The group will be led by Dominicans from our Center: Fr. Łukasz Miśko OP, who has walked the Ways of St. James in Spain and Poland many times, and Fr. Wojciech Sznyk OP, who will lead the singing.

So how do you apply?

From 3 April we accept applications from candidates through a preliminary form. On the basis of the information received, and depending on the number of applications and the candidates’ aptitude, the organizers will select a group of 20 participants – information about this will be sent to participants gradually from mid-May. Those invited will make the final decision about taking part and will fill in the final registration form, accepting the terms and conditions.

Our Center has applied to the National Centre for Culture for funding for the project, especially for concerts of liturgical music in historic churches in towns along the Sudetes Camino and for audio-video material documenting our journey and promoting the idea of the Polish Way of St. James. The decision on the application will be made no later than 10.05.2024, and the cost of taking part in the project depends on whether we are granted these additional funds; the final participation fee will be announced no later than mid-May.

If no external funding is granted, the cost of taking part will be at most PLN 300 – the funds raised in this way will cover the cost of organizing the event, preparing and printing materials, transporting luggage, and so on. In any case, participants cover the cost of travel to Bystrzyca Kłodzka and back from Lubań, as well as their own food during the pilgrimage. A car will accompany us along the way to transport the luggage.
